Black Economic Empowerment

Powerbars and Control cc is a majority black owned South African engineering company.  Powerbars has methodically increased the proportion of goods and services procured from suppliers owned by historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs) as part of its compliance with the guidelines regarding black economic empowerment in the business.

The company is a dynamic organization which is focused on the growth and development of knowledge and skills of all employees, especially those from previously disadvantaged communities. Powerbars supports the principles of affirmative action and strives to create real opportunities for previously disadvantaged individuals. During the last financial year, Powerbars and Control cc has successfully implemented an "Affirmative Procurement Policy" in 2006, and in 2010 has achieved an 80.40, thus classifying it as a level 3 BEE company.

In its support of affirmative action policies, Powerbars and Control cc strives to do business with companies which have similar visions, and as a consequence reached this previously reached status.

Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) is a program launched by the South African government to redress the wrongs of the past and to create an integrated, diverse environment with the aim of stimulating the country’s full economic potential. BEE is intended to transform the economy to be representative of the demographic make-up of the country without compromising the stability and productivity of business and the economy.

Black Economic Empowerment is driven by legislation and regulation. An integral part of the BEE Act of 2003 is a sector-wide generic scorecard, which measures companies’ empowerment progress in the following areas:
-    Employment Equity
-    Management Control
-    Skills Development
-    Ownership
-    Socio-Economic Development
-    Preferential Procurement
-    Enterprise Development
